- The images in this folder were taken in and around
- Pevensey Castle.
-
- William landed here.
-
- Why ?
-
- Some historians say that he landed by mistake.
- Others, that he had good knowledge of the area -
- mainly through a local monastic house that was
- Norman in origin !
-
-
- He fortified an area within the old Saxon Shore
- Fort that was here. Remains of the original
- Roman walls can still be seen.
-
- The Paint files are as follows :
-
- Pev 2 - from the walls of the medieval castle,
- looking south to the coast.
- This gives an idea of just how flat the
- area is.
- The land beyond the walls would have been
- flooded in 1066.
- Pevensey harbour stood outside and at the
- foot of these walls.
-
- Pev 3 - an artists impression of the area within
- the walls of Pevensey Castle.
-
- Pev 4 - the area from the air.
-
- Pev 5 - the keep of the castle would have been on
- the right here and the harbour at the foot
- of this mound.
-
- Pev 6
- Pev 7 - the area within the Roman walls.
- It is in this open area that William
- would have constructed his wooden
- fortifications.
-
-
- Using the material in this folder, pupils could
- draw up a plan for their fortification of the
- area.
-
- NOTE : view Paint files in MODE 15.
