  1. The images in this folder were taken in and around
  2. Pevensey Castle. 
  3.  
  4. William landed here.
  5.  
  6. Why ?
  7.  
  8. Some historians say that he landed by mistake.
  9. Others, that he had good knowledge of the area -
  10. mainly through a local monastic house that was
  11. Norman in origin !
  12.  
  13.  
  14. He fortified an area within the old Saxon Shore 
  15. Fort that was here. Remains of the original 
  16. Roman walls can still be seen.
  17.  
  18. The Paint files are as follows :

  20. Pev 2 - from the walls of the medieval castle,
  21.         looking south to the coast.
  22.         This gives an idea of just how flat the
  23.         area is.
  24.         The land beyond the walls would have been
  25.         flooded in 1066.
  26.         Pevensey harbour stood outside and at the
  27.         foot of these walls.

  29. Pev 3 - an artists impression of the area within
  30.         the walls of Pevensey Castle.

  32. Pev 4 - the area from the air.
  33.  
  34. Pev 5 - the keep of the castle would have been on
  35.         the right here and the harbour at the foot
  36.         of this mound.

  39. Pev 7 - the area within the Roman walls.
  40.         It is in this open area that William
  41.         would have constructed his wooden
  42.         fortifications.

  45. Using the material in this folder, pupils could
  46. draw up a plan for their fortification of the
  47. area.
